Because of the publicized use of hypnosis as enterntainment many people believe that hypnosis involves doing things that might be embarrrassing in an unconscious state.  The truth is that all hypnosis is self hypnosis.  It involves using the unconscous part of your brain in a positive way that can be helpful in changing a person's self image, reducing the desire for certain addictions and helping a client engage in relaxation.

According to the American Psychotherapy and Medical Hypnosis Association (APMHA) it is important to use hypnosis as part of a treatment plan by a qualified, licensed mental health professional.

The therapist can utilize hypnosis to help reduce tension, handle chronic pain, improve self esteem and decrease the cravings for cigaretts and food addiction.  This can only be accomplished as part of an overall treatment plan that focuses on changes in the thought process as well as behavioral choices.
